About the Score

Just as writer/director George Lucas intended the STAR WARS trilogy as a pastiche of his greatest cultural influences, composer John Williams took inspiration from classical film giants like Holst, Wagner, and Dvorak to bring grandeur to this fantastical space opera. For this third installment, Williams carries the many familiar melodies of the previous two films, lending a vital coherence of vision. Williams introduces some new leitmotifs in RETURN OF THE JEDI as well, like the playful March of the Ewoks, a sinister theme for the wicked Emperor, and a solemn melody signifying a surprising connection between Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. Williams would continue writing music for the following six STAR WARS movies, cementing a legacy that gave us a decades-spanning film music project, arguably the most beloved in film music history.
