About the Score

Peter Jackson’s stated goal for the music of THE LORD OF THE RINGS, from the outset, was to capture the expansiveness of Tolkien’s high-fantasy epic. Composer Howard Shore proved himself more than up to this monumental task, employing full orchestras, globe-spanning musical influences, ethereal artists like Enya, all-boy choirs, and even a team of sixty Wellington footballers, to craft a full musical palette representative of the grand scope of Middle-earth’s peoples and cultures. You more fully understand the physical and cultural distinctions between Hobbits and Dwarves, between Elves and Orcs, because the score informs those differences. Beyond his charge to enrich a worldly and diverse fantasy realm, Shore takes a Wagnerian approach to the story’s core characters and ideas, composing upwards of fifty distinct musical leitmotifs to underscore the temptations of the evil Ring of Power, and the heroism of a Fellowship of beings seeking to rid their world of that evil. As the Fellowship embarks on its solemn journey, Shore welcomes the viewer to join them on their adventure. And as the credits for THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING roll, those unforgettable musical themes ring in your head and stir your imagination, creating anticipation for Part 2 of this great film trilogy.
