Introduced by Rachael Z. DeLue, director of the Princeton Humanities Initiative, and Christopher Binyon Sarofim ’86 Professor in American Art in the Department of Art & Archaeology and the Effron Center for the Study of America.
Based on Amy Tan’s bestselling novel, THE JOY LUCK CLUB follows four Chinese American women and their immigrant mothers as they navigate love, identity and generational conflict. Through interconnected stories spanning decades and continents, the film reveals how cultural expectations and personal sacrifices shape their relationships. Only the second film since 1961’s Flower Drum Song to feature a majority Asian cast telling an Asian American story, THE JOY LUCK CLUB is a poignant exploration of heritage and family bonds. In English, Mandarin and Cantonese w/ subtitles.
This partnered screening is part of the Re-visioning America Film Series, featuring directors who explore what it means to be an American. Co-sponsored by Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton University’s Humanities Initiative, Art Against Racism and the Princeton Garden Theatre.
