Film is Dead. Long Live Film!

20241 hr 24 min

Ambler Theater head projectionist and documentary subject Jesse Crooks will lead a post film Q&A with documentary subject Todd Tuckey, an avid film collector of 16mm cartoons, in the theater on Saturday August 24 at 7:00. Audience members will also have the opportunity to visit our cinema museum adjacent to the theater to see an array of vintage projectors, posters, and other artifacts from the history of the motion picture industry. Most of the items on display were generously donated by Lou DiCrescenzo.

With many scenes filmed on site at The Ambler Theater, FILM IS DEAD. LONG LIVE FILM. explores the vanishing world of private film collecting — an obsessive, secretive, often illicit world of basement film vaults, piled-high with forgotten reels, and inhabited by passionate cinephiles devoted to the rescue and preservation of photochemical film. Condemned as pirates and hounded by the FBI, film collectors have long lurked in the shadows. Yet their efforts have resulted in the survival of countless films that would otherwise have been lost to history.  FILM IS DEAD. LONG LIVE FILM. is a lively tribute to the private film collector, a celebration of the fetishistic subculture of pre-video movie-love, and a timely reminder of the glories of analog film. Featuring scenes with Ambler Theater's head projectionist Jesse Crooks and his mentor, film historian and preservationist Lou DiCrescenzo.
