How to Steal a Million

1966 2 hr 3 min

Charles Bonnet, hailing from a family of art forgers, takes things too far when he lends his renowned "Cellini" Venus statuette to the Kléber-Lafayette Museum in Paris for a special exhibit — despite the fact that the statue was actually sculpted by Bonnet’s father, not Cellini. His daughter Nicole (Audrey Hepburn), fearing he will be found out when the statuette is closely examined by the museum, blackmails Simon Dermott (Peter O’Toole), who she mistakenly thinks is a society burglar, into helping her steal the statue from the museum. Hepburn and O'Toole are lovely in this frothy, comedic heist adventure. Featuring a charming score composed by John Williams.

About the Fashion: Once again, Audrey Hepburn was styled by lifelong collaborator Hubert de Givenchy in this film. Givenchy was one of the pioneers of minimalist fashion, and he dresses Hepburn’s Nicole in sophisticated style throughout the film. The ensemble she wears in the first scene exemplifies her character's style and is an iconic representation of 60s chic: a white driving outfit consisting of a bespoke midi skirt, suit jacket with short sleeves, clean belt and tie, Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses, and helmet hat. In contrast, she must dress as a frowsy cleaning woman at the museum in a scene later in the film, and O'Toole's character gives a nod to Givenchy in the dialogue as he evaluates her get-up:
Simon Dermott: Yes, that's fine. That does it.
Nicole Bonnet: Does what?
Simon Dermott: Well, for one thing, it gives Givenchy a night off.
